Founded in 1834, Phelps Dodge Corp. is one of the world's leading producers of copper. The company is a world leader in the production of molybdenum, and the largest producer of molybdenum-based chemicals and continuous-cast copper rod. The company also processes other minerals as byproducts, such as gold, silver and rhenium.

Phelps Dodge provides the world with about 8 percent of the copper and 20 percent of the molybdenum used each year. The company’s products are critical components for a number of business sectors, including energy, telecommunications, transportation and health care.

Phelps Dodge believes in giving back to the communities in which its employees work and live. Besides providing quality jobs and a good tax base for communities, the company’s strategically managed community involvement program supports quality of life through partnerships, in-kind donations and financial contributions, and a focus on building relationships of mutual trust. Phelps Dodge’s 14,500 employees volunteer thousands of hours each year to causes important to them, and the company supports and encourages employee volunteer activities.

Phelps Dodge supports a range of programs and activities – from education and training programs to community and economic development initiatives – aimed at assisting communities in increasing their capacity to thrive and achieve long-term sustainability.  The company is pleased to be the presenting sponsor of the National Summit of Mining Communities and supports its mission to encourage open dialogue to find innovative solutions, share best practices and facilitate collaborations that create successful partnerships to weather the cycles of the mining industry.

City of Leadville. Leadville and Lake County, Colorado enjoyed a rich mining history that, of course, placed the community within several boom and bust economic cycles.  Over the last 20+ years, since our mines have closed, tourism has become the number one driving force in our economy.  Yet, the community still struggles with a tax base that is not large enough to support the governmental needs, an economy not large or diverse enough to meet our shopping needs, draining dollars from our economy.  "I think that Leadville and Lake County can learn lessons from the diverse experience of other mining communities and, during our next cycle of mineral extraction can put some of those lessons to the test to benefit our community". Leadville Mayor, Bud Elliott
