Freeport McMoRan

The merger between Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. and Phelps Dodge Corp. combines not only our businesses, but also our respective commitments to the global communities and environment in which we operate. As one of the world’s major producers of copper, gold and molybdenum, we recognize the importance of providing these essential metals to today’s economies. But we also have an obligation to do so in balance with our corporate and social responsibilities in order to safeguard future generations. This is the core concept of sustainable development, which we embrace both as our corporate civic duty and as a prudent business practice.

We pledge to continuing sharing our values of stewardship, corporate citizenship, and the safety of our workers and neighbors. Together, we will pursue continuous improvement in our sustainable development performance, guided by official policies. As operators of some of the world’s greatest mines, we remain vigilant in responding to the significant challenges confronting us; and we are resolved to surmount them.

City of Leadville. Leadville and Lake County, Colorado enjoyed a rich mining history that, of course, placed the community within several boom and bust economic cycles.  Over the last 20+ years, since our mines have closed, tourism has become the number one driving force in our economy.  Yet, the community still struggles with a tax base that is not large enough to support the governmental needs, an economy not large or diverse enough to meet our shopping needs, draining dollars from our economy.  "I think that Leadville and Lake County can learn lessons from the diverse experience of other mining communities and, during our next cycle of mineral extraction can put some of those lessons to the test to benefit our community". Leadville Mayor, Bud Elliott
